Frankincense, a vital symbol of Oman’s heritage, has long been central to Amouage. In 2023, it reached a totemic expression in Purpose Eau de Parfum, composed by Quentin Bisch under the direction of Chief Creative Officer Renaud Salmon. The fragrance is a sincere portrait of the entire frankincense tree-roots, branches, leaves and resin-enhanced by Pink Pepper, Papyrus and a distinctive sand-grown Vetiver that amplify the material’s many facets.

A year later, ongoing creative dialogue led Salmon and Bisch to revisit the composition, not to correct it, but to explore its depths further. The result was Purpose 50, an Extrait that delves beneath the surface, re-anchoring the fragrance in the earth itself. Darker, weightier and more ancient in tone, the frankincense here is joined by rooty Sand Vetiver, heated Papyrus and leathery Saffron, all transformed into a more grounded, introspective expression.

A bespoke Sandalwood accord lends gravitas and meditative depth, while Vanillin adds a subtle, skin-like sensuality. Purpose 50 becomes an immersive meditation on nature’s primeval power, revealing the hidden life beneath the soil and the profound bond between earth, tree and humanity.
